Waiting for January 20
By Judy Richardson

Heather Cox Richardson stated today: “Yesterday, the official Twitter account of the Arizona Republican Party asked followers if they were willing to die to overturn the election, then posted a clip from the film “Rambo” in which the main character is threatening someone’s life, saying “This is what we do, who we are. Live for nothing, or die for something.”
It makes us uneasy. “How extensive are the forest fires Trump is leaving behind?” His scorched earth policy seems to be affecting all areas of government and radicalizing his followers. His contempt for the “Deep State” is obvious. But beyond that his callous regard for American citizens who do not kowtow to him is contemptible. It is clearly killing us in droves. Meanwhile he is profiting from his “attempt” to overturn our 2020 election. Who knows what will happen in Georgia, especially if Democrat senators are elected? Will there be Civil War?
This should be a season of Joy- not anxious waiting for January 20, wondering what shoe will drop next. We are in suspense and hopeless to influence the outcome. I can’t even convince my sisters that Biden won the election fair and square. Why do they believe such liars? What makes them vote against their best interests?
The Bible says that the Devil is everywhere “seeking those he may devour.” It has never been a truer statement of the state of our Government. Democracy requires the consent of the governed and an informed public who rely upon truth to vote responsibly. How can the Public vote responsibly when they do not agree on facts? How can we recover from COVID-19 when Trump followers won’t wear masks or obtain immunizations? How can we stop them from claiming it is all a hoax as they sicken and die from the disease?
Conspiracy theories abound. It is said that if a person believes in one conspiracy then it is far easier for them to believe in others. Thus we hear that COVID was created in a lab in Wuhan, that the Democrats invented it to discredit Trump, that Democrats are child molesters and Hillary Clinton ran a child molestation ring out of a pizza parlor. That Trump was winning until a bunch of ballots found under a rock were dumped at 3:30 in the morning. All for Biden.
It goes on and on. Any particle of truth is twisted and distorted to make Democrats look bad, to discredit Black voters, to invalidate a historically smooth election administered by equal representatives of both Republican and Democrat parties.
It is remarkable how the power of the Presidency can be used against us. What a pulpit he holds. Undoubtedly, his persuasive powers and charisma have served him well. Subservience is required of all who work for him. He uses and casts people away when they object to his rantings and demands. He believes he was born to rule and he will twist his Presidency into a pretzel to make it fit his world view.
I remember the night before the election of 2016 I went to sleep and had a nightmare that Trump had been elected and horrible things were happening in our country. We all voted and our waking nightmare began.
Now in 2020, we turned out and we voted but we have not seen the last of this dangerous man. He and his minions will haunt us for many years to come. Hopefully, our leaders will look closely at our norms and canonize more of them to prevent even a whiff of this kind of person running for office again. Will his followers be willing to die in order to overturn our 2020 election. I hope not.
